Aroland First Nation
Aroland First Nation, an Anishnawbe community located in Northern Ontario, 60 km north of Geraldton and 20 km west of Nakina along Highway 643.
Aroland First Nation is committed to fostering education, health, cultural, and economic opportunities for its members while conserving and respecting its traditional territory. With a deep connection to the land, Aroland has served as its steward since time immemorial. Before European contact, the ancestors of Aroland First Nation thrived through hunting, fishing, cultivation, and gathering. The communitys settlement began around 1900, rooted in the fur trade with the Hudsons Bay Company.
On April 15, 1985, Aroland First Nation officially gained reserve status under the Canadian Indian Act. Today, the First Nation continues to grow, with reserve lands dedicated by Provincial and Federal governments. As a member of the Matawa First Nations Management and Nishnawbe Aski Nation, Aroland has approximately 700 members, with 400 living in the community. Other members reside in Thunder Bay, Geraldton, Longlac, and cities across Canada, including Toronto, Ottawa, and Alberta
